Somaliland’s President, Dr Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi “Irro” is in Dubai again for the World Governments Summit, marking Somaliland’s second consecutive year of participation in the high-profile global forum. The 2026 Summit is taking place from 3 – 5 February under the theme “Shaping Future Governments”.

The World Governments Summit is widely known as a major international meeting point for heads of government, senior officials, international organisations, and private-sector leaders. It focuses on governance, public-sector leadership, innovation, and global cooperation, and it attracts an audience that helps shape policy debates and investment direction.
For Somaliland, appearing on such a platform is significant because it creates direct access to global leaders, decision-makers and influential networks that Somaliland rarely reaches through formal diplomatic channels.

During the visit, President Abdirahman Irro is expected to use the summit to highlight Somaliland’s experience in state-building, locally driven peace, democratic governance, and development – areas that Somaliland often points to when engaging international partners. The Summit also provides space for bilateral meetings and investment conversations alongside the public sessions, allowing Somaliland’s President to present Somaliland’s priorities beyond the main stage.
This year’s attendance is receiving particular attention because it follows Somaliland’s participation in 2025, when Somaliland’s President used the summit to present Somaliland’s case to global leaders, investors, and policymakers and to advance a wider diplomatic and economic agenda. That appearance was viewed as a strategic effort to increase Somaliland’s visibility and demonstrate responsible governance in a setting where global narratives are formed and reinforced.
The fact that Somaliland is attending for a second consecutive year is itself meaningful. It signals continuity and persistence and suggests that Somaliland is pursuing sustained engagement rather than one-off outreach. Over time, repeated participation in major international forums can reduce misunderstanding and help reposition Somaliland in the eyes of external audiences—from a little-known political question to a practical governance and partnership reality.

While recognition remains Somaliland’s long-term political objective, diplomatic progress often develops through incremental steps. Platforms like the World Governments Summit offer Somaliland an opportunity to present its case, highlight institutional capacity, and strengthen its positioning as a stable partner ready for cooperation, investment, and long-term partnerships.
